This year, our school has incorporated a “mindfulness” moment into our daily schedule. Our school believes that investing just a little bit of our time in quality and thoughtful lessons will make a long-lasting effect in each and every child’s life. What is mindfulness exactly and how does it look in the classroom? Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now. Words such as calm, focus, presence, health, connection, and well-being are just a few that describe this activity.
Mindfulness practice includes meditation, breathing techniques, sensory games and boxes, and reading quietly to calming music. These are just a few activities we are currently exploring in our classroom.
Our mindfulness center is becoming a reality as the days go by. Currently, I have 2 sensory balls, one huge pillow and books, feelings poster, and 5 sensory boxes in a quiet, cozy corner of my classroom. I would love to include 4 Buddha Boards and a couple of Zen Gardens to complete the longed for effect. I am fully committed to promote a creative corner, open and accessible at all times to each and every student needing a break from our daily schedule.
