Active note-taking and annotation are strategies that have been proven to have one of the largest effect sizes on struggling readers and academics. The reason is that many students do not naturally summarize and identify significant moments is these strategies need to be actively taught and monitored with feedback to clear up struggles and misconceptions. Per the two-year course requirements for IB, students are asked to revisit their text and annotations and write a 5-6 page paper on a topic that demonstrates their analytical power. My students’ success will be greatly aided by the opportunity to revisit their thinking in their annotated text rather than having to reconstruct their thinking through memory or from separate paper notes.
With the gift of individual student copies of Sing, Unburied, Sing, my students can discuss efficiently and no longer have to deal with impediments such as editions with differences in pagination, post-it notes that fall out or have to be purchased or cut up. If students own their own copy I can further coach them on layered annotation so they can compare their first interactions to later interactions that may reflect the greater depth of knowledge of the content, occasion, and connections. Additionally, students will not need to return the text before they are called upon to write or speak about it in a required IB assessment.
In many IB schools, students are required to purchase all of their English texts. That is not a reasonable expectation for 90% of my students. Personal copies of Sing, Unburied, Sing would alleviate hurdles for IB English students and provide equitable footing with their IB alike peers. Thank you for considering my project.
