My students enjoy pretend play, games and participating in cooking and multi-sensory activities. The materials requested will help increase language and social skills as well as student engagement.
While they are having fun, they have no idea that I’m addressing their speech and language goals at the same time! I’m able to help them increase their language for a variety of pragmatic functions (requesting, labeling, commenting, gaining attention, rejecting, etc.). I'm also able to address goals to increase vocabulary, answering/asking questions, following directions (sequential, before/after, spatial, quantitative, basic), executive function skills (planning, organizing, sequencing, etc.), complex language skills (compare/contrast, sequencing, sorting, etc.) and social skills. I find it rewarding to see my students speech and language skills blossom when participating in these hands-on activities.
