This year we are really turning up our focus on close reading. We're teaching our students to read a text closely with an eye for the author's craft and purpose. In order to do this, we need to make sure our students have access to great books that are worth reading closely. They are building their confidence with longer chapter books and are so looking forward to reading more and more of them!
What could be a better book to start with than Kate DiCamillo's, Because of Winn-Dixie? It's a heart-warming tale of friendship and thanks (not to mention the fantastic relationship between the main character, her dog, and the town's librarian). I support literacy instruction across our entire grade level, 120 students in all! In order to successfully teach this novel, each student will need their own copy of the text.
