In my Engineering Technology class that I teach at Northern Cambria Middle School, the students look at my STEAM class and how I integrate the things that they know and have learned into a fun, hands-on project. We have done the CO2 cars the past few years. I teach the students about Aerodynamics, Friction, and how to use the machines in the Wood Constitution Lab. However, the only way we can race the cars is using a hammer to punch a hole into the CO2 cartridges and the students hand time the car's races. We cannot race head to head, and our times are not accurate.
These items will be used in the middle school, high school, and the extra-curricular organization TSA multiple times during the year.
In NCMS TSA's first year, I had ten students who were interested in doing the CO2 car competition. However, I was unable to accurately pick the best eight cars for competition. Next year, I feel as though the interest level will only increase. This race track will also travel to the high school where the high school TSA students can race their cars too see which car they designed is better.
