Having an Art Center gives my students a way of expressing themselves. Out of 22 of my students, 19 are ELL and 8 cannot speak or understand English at all. Art is a very natural and soothing way of expression that allows students to feel safe. They will be able to use this art center as a voice to help me understand their needs.
Students will be able to use our art supplies during journaling which we do every day; some students are not fluent in English yet and they are able to create pictures instead of words and tell their stories through their pictures.
We have center rotations every day; their students review phonemic and phonological awareness in these centers. One center students would be able to use different types of craft items to show their understanding.
I have fun Friday for my students and the art supplies would be used for different craft activities.
I would like to also use the art supplies and one of the fun centers that they are allowed to also do on Fridays.
Our campus has limited funding and this is something that I myself cannot afford. So many time when students cannot speak English I always have them to draw a picture and that tells me so much about that child. This will be such an addition to the differentiated learning that I already do in my classroom.
