Students will each be given a copy of the text, Les Miserables, to take home with them. The copy will be theirs to keep. They will grapple with the text on their own before coming to class each day and discussing it with their peers.
I'm hoping this will help my students in three ways.
1. This will prepare them for college.
Working with texts at home will help them build the autonomy and habits that will serve them in their collegiate studies.
2. This will give them a sense of ownership.
Because each student will have his/her designated copy, I believe the students will be more likely to be responsible with them and treat them with care.
3. This will help them engage with literature.
Because the copies will be theirs, the students can write in the margins, highlight important passages, and underline confusing words. This interaction will help them to stay engaged.
