I teach Advanced Placement English, advise the National Honor Society, and lead the Fiat Lux Academy (honors program) at my school, where over 85% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The students in AP English and in the Fiat Lux Academy work extremely hard, challenging themselves not just in AP English but also AP math and science courses. Unlike many other schools in the district, my English classes are diverse, with well over half of my AP students being Latino or other underrepresented minority. They challenge the traditional stereotype of who should be in advanced courses. They have incredible heart. Every day I work with them reminds me that the tremendous difficulties that come with teaching adolescents are far outweighed by the rewards earned from the work I do.
