My 18-22 year old students with disabilities work in a large central kitchen learning vocational skills and independent living skills. They also run a Cafe in the district offices where students prepare all the food and serve customers.
Our students learn functional academics on the job, such as filling out time cards, calculating amounts of product needed and following recipes. Students participate in community based instruction, going out to banks, shopping and participating in recreational activities with the money earned from working.
Our class is a Transition Class, the bridge from school to the adult work world. Students grow so much in these important years, it is wonderful to watch their progress.
