Fountas & Pinnell place "Interactive Read Aloud & Discussion" at the top of the umbrella of responsive literacy teaching. Tests for IRA are very carefully selected. Students are supported by the teacher and other students in the class as they think and talk Within the Text, Beyond the Text, and About the Text. Students are freed from the responsibility of decoding text as the teacher is the one doing the reading. This allows the child to think deeply and participate with classmates in responding to the text in a group discussion or follow up lesson.
I have had the opportunity to spend over a week training in a new literacy framework and am excited to implement this transformative program!
