Warriors Don't Cry is a true story about courage. The real people in this memoir had to needlessly endure shame, suffering and torment. Students relate to this book in a way that is timeless, reaching across history and connecting intimately. My students, specifically, relate because of their myriad of learning disabilities and the heavy emotional scars they have endured throughout their education. This book has a way of creating inspired readers, political activists, agents of change in the community, and just plain hopeful humans.
After reading, our students will transform into agents of change. This unit serves as a basis for a community project. Students choose one thing in their community that they are troubled by, whether it be stray dogs, teen dating violence, obesity, etc. They create an informational campaign as well as writing a deeply personal memoir to share with their classmates. Each class creates a bulletin board of public service information in the hallway.
This book and its effects will be passed down from this class to the next, changing lives.
