iPads at our Elementary school will open up the technology world for our primary students and introduce them to the field of computer programming. A classroom set will allow for implementation of the Hour of Code where our students will learn the basics of computer science and how to program fun, introductory classes. Using resources from a Code site on their iPads, they will learn the basics of code with drag and drop operations suitable for primary learners. iPads will also allow for easier navigation and access to engaging applications that will help students express their creativity while improving their ability to master Common Core content. Using Little Bird Tales, a digital storytelling application, our students will become authors and add their own personal voice recordings to tell the stories they create. Through this program’s creative story building tool, they will be able to write, add illustration or digitally draw their own artwork to complete their stories, which they will then be able to share with the rest of the school. Utilizing iPads and this software, our students will also be able to create commercials, history timelines, science experiments, and ebooks either independently or collaboratively. We are a high poverty school with close to 75% of our students qualifying for free and/or reduced lunches. Allowing access to quality technology programs enhances the quality of education we can provide for them.
