Peek inside my classroom and you won't see bored students sitting in straight rows in regular chairs. You might see one group of scholars gathered on a fluffy green carpet, not a chair in site. You might see readers relaxing in camping chairs at the back of the room, deep into the plot of a book. Look harder, and you will see thinkers sitting on crates with a comfortable cushion. Look further still, and you'll see writers laying on the carpet, clipboard in hand, brow furrowed in concentration.
We have been diving into the brave new world of "flexible seating" in my classroom this year. I have found the students are excited to come to class. They look forward to trying all the seating options and it gives a little extra "sparkle" to the day. What we need now are stability balls. Stability balls allow for a little more "wiggle." They help the students concentrate by giving them an outlet for that extra energy that is packed inside their ten year old bodies. It provides that extra "bounce" in their step, if you will.
We are looking to add four more stability balls to our classroom. We currently have one and it has been a big hit! The students have been incredibly responsible when sitting on it, and they fully understand that it is a privilege to have these seating choices. Thank-you for your interest in our project!
