If my project is funded, I'll invite parents of struggling primary-grade students in for a workshop based on Shari Robertson's research-based program. Many parents know that they are supposed to read with their children. However, they get overwhelmed by several factors. They many not have or know which books to read or they may not know what to do with books. "Echo" reading is the first part of the program, though--in my opinion--it's the easiest and the most fun. I consider it a perfect "gateway" strategy to involving parents and, ultimately, ensuring that kids will LOVE and WANT to read.
