Our classroom is an amazing space where both English and Spanish are used fluidly. When it comes time for literacy, however, we have access to many more materials in English than in Spanish. Often students' choices are limited to the textbook or a few books in their native language.
More books in Spanish would allow us to have a more dynamic Spanish literacy block including literature circles, and more high-interest choices for students.
We have chosen books that can integrate with our social studies units, are high-interest for young readers, and are at a range of grade levels to accommodate the students in class.
Literacy in a student's first language is a direct indicator of their achievement level in English literacy. Spanish resources are critical for my students' success.
