Graphic novels are a great way to pull in struggling readers and inspire an interest in reading for pleasure. Many of my students are reading below grade level and have yet to discover an interest in reading.
Smile and Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier both have intriguing graphics and are at an appropriate reading level for my struggling readers in middle school. A couple of my students have picked up my copy of Smile and asked to borrow it to read at home. This is a teacher's dream! With a fresh set of graphic novels to choose from, my students will be able to gain confidence in their ability to read and enjoy a book, maybe for the first time!
