Creating a nurturing learning environment where children feel safe, happy, and secure is my number one priority.It is a prerequisite to any academic learning taking place. In order to create this environment, my students need direct instruction on inappropriate behaviors and their consequences, as well as appropriate behaviors and what they look like. These story books provide me with an entertaining, concrete way to teach children abstract topics such as the value of respecting others by listening and waiting for their turn to speak, practicing accepting responsibility, turning bad days into good, and that rules are meant to help, not harm, among many other important social unseen rules that typically developing students acquire without much practice. The iPad reinforces these social lessons with many useful apps to monitor and reward behavior as well as to add an animated quality to social curriculums that are in place. These apps not only keep students interested and motivated, but they offer the visual that they need to self monitor and grow into successful, independent members of society.
