We ask our students, day after day, to sit quietly and listen. Then repeat that for multiple classes a day. The older they get in school the more we demand of them intellectually as well as behaviorly. Sometimes a change in seating can inspire new thinking which can lead to new learning, new growth, new excitement, and renewed attention. I want my students to feel comfortable in my class and sometimes the ability to choose their seat gives them one more factor of comfort which leads to more learning. It is hard to sit all day long on hard chairs when you are restless and need some activity or movement. Alternate seating would be a bonus for all learners.
