This program is brand new at our school and having access to a colored printer within our classroom will allow us to create clear visuals for the students to support functional communication and learning.
Most of the students within our class use PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), which is a unique form of an alternative/augmentative communication. There are several phases of PECS and it begins by teaching an individual to give a single picture of a desired item or action to a "communicative partner" who will then honor the exchange as a request. The system then goes on to teach discrimination of pictures and how to put them together in sentences. The primary goal of PECS is to teach functional communication.
My students are in the early stages of PECS and would greatly benefit from a colored printer so that I could create visual supports, helping them communicate effectively.
