Mathematics is a very abstract subject to learn, especially for young students who are just developing an understanding of numbers. For this reason, the first grade team at WVE, would like to help our students develop a more concrete understanding of mathematical concepts through hands on manipulation of objects. This will help students develop a deeper understanding of how to think mathematically as they gain knowledge through practice. The mathematical manipulatives you would be providing to our class through your donation are: Rekenreks, Base 10 Blocks, Ten Frames, Bear Counters, Chain Links, Dice, and Mini Clocks. Each of these items will help students develop computation skills related to addition and subtraction, with the exception of the Mini Clocks, which will help students learn to tell time.
A donation to this project will ensure that the students in our classrooms will learn how to physically create mathematical models to represent abstract ideas. Students will be able to assess and verify their thinking as they solve the problems that are presented to them. They will also acquire the ability to explain their mathematical thinking to others, which is a valuable skill to develop as the concepts they learn will continue to become more complex. Finally, using math manipulatives is an engaging way to help students stay on task as they are learning math. Thank you for your help in developing young minds!
