Prior to becoming a public school teacher, I was a martial arts instructor for 20+ years. Before that, I was also a kid with anger issues. Martial arts training provided me with an appropriate outlet for anger. Instead of hitting a wall or a person, I had a heavy bag and kickboxing equipment.
When I moved into middle school teaching I noticed there are a lot of kids who need an outlet for their anger and frustration, and if they are not provided one, may injure themselves or others. I have been able to intervene in some cases and prevent the escalation of a conflict by using some old equipment from home. However, I want to give the students in my school a heavy bag, boxing gloves, and other boxing equipment so that they may be more protected.
I strongly feel that this would reduce the number of office referrals, in-school and out-of-school suspensions, and peer conflicts.
