I need to remove desks and add a table to provide learning space that can be done with peers and allow for movement. Due to the need of my second graders to be able to move I implemented flexible seating in my classroom. This allows students a choice where to sit in class other than desks. Students have a choice of sitting on the rug with a pillow, beanbags, floor chairs, stools, and game chairs that I have bought over the years.
Many students experience trauma at home. These traumas often make it difficult for students to sit at a regular desk and learn. Allowing movement has increased students' ability to stay on task and have success in class. I have seen greater independence, motivation and self confidence since we have switched to flexible seating. Students are surprised and proud of what they are accomplishing. Your donation will allow more flexible seating choices in my classroom as well as allow the students to have a table that they can work in small groups or partners. I look forward to adding to the flexible seating choices and the rewards that flexible seating allows for the students.
