As a 5th grade math teacher, I am always looking for new ways to spark their interest and expand their learning. My mathematicians are curious, creative, and love to collaborate. On a certain day of the week (TBD), students will participate in STEM challenges or kits with each other. The “Create-A-Chain-Reaction” STEM Kit, “Don’t Lose Your Marbles” STEM Learning Lab, “Hydraulics Engineering” STEM kit, and “Building Brick” STEM Challenge Kit will all be used during this allotted time. These resources have students create, problem solve, and/or build materials. This is a great way for students to let their creativity shine because there are no restrictions or limitations. They aren’t worrying about getting the right or wrong answers, nor is there a test at the end. It is truly geared towards collaboration and hands-on learning. This kind of learning builds confidence, team work, and higher-level thinking.
