Support Mrs. Parra's classroom with a gift that fosters learning.
I wanted to share a hobby of mine that would help my students continue to grow both mentally and physically. Most of these students would not be able to afford the supplies that are needed to complete a small project without financial support. By providing the crochet hooks and yarn, it puts the focus on the activity and not the out of pocket cost. Giving the students a variety of colored yarn can provide the students with an open pallet.
I learned how to crochet in 3rd grade and shared this with my class. Since that time, my students have shown interest in crocheting and began to teach each other. I have as many boys as I have girls, and all the boys have learned how to crochet.
Crocheting engages both sides of the brain with focusing and coordination. As the students are sewing, they also share the value of the Vietnamese language within the classroom. With my class being a Dual language environment, communicating in both Vietnamese and English during a more relaxed setting can support every student in their second language. This comfortable environment can also provide a setting for the students to confide in each other about any issues at school or at home.
Now that the students know the basic stitches of crochet, I would like to see all the students sew the same project. I thought they could try to sew a pot holder for Valentines Day or Mothers Day. Some of the students have asked if there would be enough yarn to sew a hat or scarf. There are many colors that are very important to the Vietnamese culture and I would like to provide that availability. It is important that all the students feel successful in completing a project.
