My students want to take thrown out school food and compost it anaerobically to produce superior worm food. The daphnia and duckweed will all be fed to the fish which are producing waste to feed our plants.
This project allows students to experience the rewards of recycling. They will observe how nutrient cycling by micro-organisms benefits higher trophic levels. Their aquaponic set up will now have its own food supply courtesy of the garbage can. The bokashi mix uses yeast and bacteria to ferment food scraps which then get added to the vermiculture to be finished off by red worms. Worm castings are great plant fertilizer and the worms keep the fish happy and healthy.
Students will be engaged by this hands-on activity that will not only help them with biology, but also help them to be more thoughtful global citizens.
