Ratta-tap-tap. Swish, swish, swish. Restless motions beat the table, sweeping the room with rhythmic melodies of a restless imagination. On the other side of the room, a student yawns before giving up and putting their pencil down, hood over their head, ready for sleep to take them at any moment while unknowingly sending another student into a yawning frenzy. Another student furiously scribbles away although not on their homework. Instead, it's the side of their book or the table surface. Meanwhile another student stares at the wall, hoping for class to end sooner rather than later.
Everyday, we are faced with students who have entirely too much on their minds and cannot focus on what is in front of them. Silent fidgeting cubes will replace the thrumming of pencils tapping on the table, fingers drumming the surface, and toes bouncing on the floor. Light covers should combat the need to shield their faces from the harsh florescent lights and in turn, reduce the urge to sleep. Aromatherapy with essential oils such as lavender, spearmint, and stress relief blend will permeate the air, encouraging focus and/or relaxation in the classroom and reduce anxiety.
