I have 16 eager third graders in my classroom. Our school is located in an urban setting and is comprised of approximately 65% second language learners of English. Ninety-nine percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students come from diverse backgrounds and immerse themselves daily in the cultures of peers. Most students who are learning English arrive from El Salvador, Colombia, and Peru. Each child brings something special to the classroom through experience and areas of expertise. They make our school an exceptional place to be through their determination to be successful academically while embracing the many cultures that come together within our walls.
Despite challenges of poverty and language, my third graders are eager to learn.
