Even though my students come from one of the highest poverty districts in the state, they do not let that define who they are. Everyday they enter my classroom with smiles and eager to learn. Currently, my students have limited access to technology at home. The majority of my students only have prior experience with text messaging and iPhone keypads. The skills required to operate a desktop computer and keyboard are severely lacking, simply because these tools are not affordable for students' families.
I need keyboards for my class so students can begin experiencing the iPads as a learning resource and not just a gaming center. Keyboards would enable me to begin teaching the necessary keyboarding and word processing skills my students are required to know in order to become high school and college and career ready!
In addition, Common Core testing is now computer based which increases the need of keyboards in the classroom. Practicing with keyboards will help build the necessary common core computer skills to be successful in not just content knowledge but technologically savvy as well!!!
Finally, with keyboards student would be able to take advantage of the apps OneNote, Pages, and Notes. Students would be able to create, edit, and publish classroom writing pieces.
