I am the 2nd grade math teacher at a public school in the Roseland community, on the far south side of Chicago. Many of my students have to overcome obstacles just to come to school in the morning. On their walk to school, they have to walk down streets lined with litter. Their communities are plagued with violence. Curtis School of Excellence acts a refuge for students, if only for eight hours a day, where they can come and be affirmed, challenged, and grow. A place where they are given the tools to rise above all of the obstacles in their way and experience success. A place where they are equipped with tools that will help them access new opportunities that will allow them to better themselves, their families, and their communities. My students and their families are resilient and deserve equitable opportunities and access to a quality education.
