We can't teach our students without knowing them really well, and I firmly believe that strong stories draw out even stronger ones. With these mentor texts -- which I will use in the classroom over and over to teach reading strategies, reading response, writing moves, empathy, character traits and more -- my students will have a clear road map to follow. They will be able to highlight true success stories or watch me tackle text in ways that they can emulate, and these will be the main mentor books we use for the entire third-grade year.
As teachers, we are in constant pursuit of growth and learning, and I want to facilitate this expectation and love for lifelong positive change by sharing stories with my students of people and characters who did just that. Together as a classroom community, we will refer to our mentor texts time and time again in order to find answers, note literary moves, and grow.
