I have a very energetic class that loves to move around. Throughout the day I see them squirm in their seat and know they feel uncomfortable having to sit in a chair that doesn't meet their needs. I implemented a couple of different seating arrangements in my classroom that allow the students to be in a different area of the classroom other than their student school chair. However, there are only a few spots and all 28 students would love to use them on a daily basis. As I see them working in the classroom at these few spots, they have shown improvement in their attention and focus in learning.
My students are the ones who inspired me to create an environment that includes flexible seating. I am asking for four Active Learning Stools, four Saucer Chairs, four Mesh Task Chairs, four Square Leg Counter Stools, and four Gaiam Kids Balance Balls.
When my students enter the classroom they will have a choice of where to sit using the materials provided below. The room will be set up in a variety of ways that will help support student learning. Using the student mesh task office chair and the square leg counter stool, students will be able to stand and do their work, but have the option to sit as well. There will be two table groups where they can use the active learning stool and balance ball. These two items support active movement and will help calm my students. In addition, the saucers are a place the students can lounge and feel comfortable completing tasks.
My students will greatly benefit from these choices to allow them to be successful in their education. When students are able to make a choice, it increases their engagement. They will feel a sense of ownership in their learning and they can strive to do their best. Flexible seating supports both physical and cognitive strength.
