Forty percent of my students are reading below a fifth grade reading level. We are implementing multiple fluency strategies, like reader's theater, to work on the pace of their reading. We also encourage independent reading time as much as possible! During literacy centers independent reading time is carved out for each child as well as 30 minutes of reading every night for homework. We are currently in the middle a 100 book challenge before Spring break as well. All of these efforts are to encourage my students to read more and help increase their fluency.
My next bright idea is what I like to call pedaling our way to fluency! While students are reading and peddling, they will be strengthening their body as well as their reading skills. My hope is that while students are moving, their reading will flow effortlessly.
