Despite coming from an at risk back ground, the students have dreams of going to college. They are very creative and love to read,and be read to.
Every day at the beginning of class we have silent sustained reading for practice. The students often request to take the books home, but we don't let them, this way they have a hook to come back to class every day.
Many students are far behind, but the scores are going up thanks to dedicated teachers. They enjoy project based learning, and write book reports once a month.
