Our high school science department is in the process of a curriculum rewrite to make our science courses more relevant and in line with 21st century skills used in the work place.
This engaging, inquiry-based activity is student-centered and requires the use of several cross curricular skills. For example, the Sherlock Bones kit serves as a mini anatomy lesson as students measure models of a skull, pelvis, femur, and humerus and use terms to describe different bone structures. They will develop math skills in using calipers and protractors as well as doing mathematical calculations.
Although in this investigation students become forensic anthropologists to identify skeletal remains, the most beneficial skills they will take away from this activity are collaboration, reasoning, and problem solving, all skills applicable to any profession.
