In the past years, my Biology classes have collected maple sap and made maple syrup as a proof that photosynthesis creates sugars. We have collected 40 gallons of sap in the first year and 80 gallons in the second making 1 gallon and 2 gallons of syrup respectively.
With the addition of more taps and a more effective way of boiling the sap, our class hopes to expand our ability to produce maple syrup with the entire school community. Students will document their maple syrup experience from tapping the trees, collection of sap daily, construction of the evaporator (barrel stove) and the boil. The boil will be a school wide activity observable by all 1000 students and maple syrup will be available to sample.
Students will also discuss the process of photosynthesis, tree identification, and the affect of invasive species on trees (Asian Longhorn Beetle).
We need materials like DR55 Drum, Grate for Barrel Kit, and a Cast Iron Barrel Stove Kit.
