My 7th grade students are connected to the world around them. They have many choices about how to spend their time. They get excited about reading, but only when they feel their voices are being heard about building the classroom library they want. They created lists at the beginning of the year of the books they want to read most, and they include books like Allegedly and Monday's Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson. And books by Jeff Kinney and Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson. Not only do these books engage and excite my students, but they help my students see themselves in the world. My classes include students with a range of experiences and social awareness. The books on this hot picks list will model the tough choices kids their age have to make as they negotiate their place in the world.
These hot picks will get my students hooked on reading for the year! They will savor these books and pass them around for months! My goal is to make sure that the kids in my classes love to read. This project will help get us off to the right start!
