Students at my school currently have to share Chromebooks in a rotation with over 1000 other students in the school. In addition, there are approximately six weeks each spring in which they do not have any Chromebooks because they are all being used for state tests.
My students are beginning their favorite research and writing unit of the year in which they write persuasive letters to members of our community. During this unit, they determine something they are passionate about and want to spark change, they research a company and its history and mission, and they compose a letter that is sent to the company or person in the community. In the past, our students have received responses and have influenced positive change. This is only one of our real-world projects in 8th grade in which they connect their learning to the real world through the use of technology to demonstrate and encourage 21st Century learning.
Unfortunately, because so many of my students are from low socio-economic homes, they cannot afford their own Chromebook.
