Second graders are so excited to show off their reading skills. They want to read to their teacher and their friends. Most of all they want to curl up in a quiet corner and read to themselves. In second grade students continue the journey toward independent reading. Some are just developing these skills. Others are well on their way and can successfully read some text without assistance. When children are able to experience success it encourages them to continue to read independently. In a classroom of more than 30 students it is difficult to consistently provide a variety of books to engage students. My students need to be able to read a book of their choosing. Research has shown that daily independent reading is necessary to develop and maintain reading skills.
