My students are strong, funny, and smart. They have big dreams and need the tools to achieve them. A lot of them will be the first in their family to go on to college and their families and our staff do the best we can to support them, but we could all use a little help.
Studies have shown that reading novels can literally change your brain (http://www.futurity.org/reading-novels-leaves-shadow-activity-brain/) and that the more students read -- especially those on the losing end of the achievement gap -- the better (http://www.summerlearning.org/?page=TheAchievementGap).
My students don't read enough. Some of them tell me that they have never enjoyed a book. This breaks my heart because they don't realize the multiple layers of what they are missing out on. They have amazing potential but they don't realize all the things that are holding them back. They need more opportunities to rise up.
