Literacy rates in America are dropping and students are being a disservice by having to read dry segments of literature from a textbook; however, I have never had a student complain about these books being boring. My project aims to bring longer readings into the classroom, so students have a greater chance to submerse themselves and analyze symbols, themes, and other elements as they develop: a feat that is difficult with only a two-page excerpt.
These books are instant classics with students. Both books have great character and thematic development, historical significance, and spark lively conversation ranging from women’s rights to the nature of justice. This is a project that turns students on to reading, teaches several Common Core aligned skills, and can easily be throttled for higher or lower performing students.
