With all of the legislative changes in Pennsylvania affecting many students with disabilities, I am concerned about the opportunities they will be given when entering the workforce. They need to learn a variety of different work skills to help them find a job within the community. Currently, because of changes, we are unsure of the possibilities that will be available to our students. For this reason, I feel it is important to offer as many work related skills as possible. If we are fortunate enough to have our project funded, we want to create a business at school for our students to run and use the financial, creative, and social living skills that they are learning.
Creating a business will give the students the opportunity to practice many skills. The students will work on following directions to create greeting cards that can be bought by the faculty and the student body. One of items listed below is a floor spinner. This will help the students learn stocking skills and keep items organized. They will be able to practice social skills by taking orders and delivering to the staff and students. Money skills, which are important for both life skills and work skills, will be an instrumental part of this project, from counting the money, giving back change, and completing banking skills to keep accurate records.
The money made from the business will be placed into an account and used to purchase more supplies. Our goal is to continue the card business for many school years. Currently, there are thirty students enrolled in our Autistic Support Program. However, this program continues to grow and new students are added throughout the year. Each of the students will eventually move through the high school program.
