Children aren’t always able to use their words to express how they’re feeling. But we know that they can show us! When a child starts crying, or throws a book, or hides under the table, or puts her head down on her desk, they are communicating with us. Strong emotions make it difficult to make good choices about what to say or do. By working with my students to practice managing their emotions, they can learn that while you may not be able to choose what emotions you feel in a situation, you can choose what you do with those feelings. My project goal is to create a safe place within the classroom, "A Classroom Chill Zone", where children can go to engage their minds and release their emotions in a safe way. "A Classroom Chill Zone" is a quiet area of the room equipped with comforting furnishings and soothing materials to help a student deescalate when upset. The purpose is to teach children how to keep themselves in control in emotionally charged situations. Teaching this skill will not only help them throughout their schooling but throughout their lives.
