The materials purchased will be used to reintroduce the love of reading in my middle school students. The books listed have been curated to grow my classroom library. In an effort to deepen my students' perspective, I have carefully selected titles that will allow the books students read to act as a mirror, window or sliding glass door.
Though every piece of literature I introduce to students, I want it to grow their curiosity and spark their empathy. I use literature as MIRRORS. I want my students to be able to see themselves REFLECTED in the literature they read. I use literature as WINDOWS. I want my students to gain a PERSPECTIVE into the lives of people who are different than them. I use literature as a DOOR. I want my students to venture to a new WORLD filled with journeys, possibilities and understanding.
It is through diverse and inclusive literature that I want to impact students' understanding of the world. It is through CHOICE of literature, students will begin to have a VOICE in this world.
