Imagine a fast food restaurant! Customers enter, form a line, and order from a large variety of choices. Now, picture a classroom, more specifically, a third grade classroom. My students are the customers and our classroom library is the menu.
At first, each reader finds something of interest, but as the year continues, readers (especially reluctant readers) struggle to stay motivated unless they have a top-notch, current, high-interest book selection at their fingertips. I need to add to my classroom menu of books to strengthen the reading habits and stamina of my readers!
When there are high-demand, high-interest, appropriately leveled books available, they go like hotcakes (no pun intended). Students sign up on waiting lists for books, they read through an entire series (one popular series in my class has 11 books). They spark the interest of classmates' and the enthusiasm becomes contagious.
