Research shows that reading builds vocabulary and fluency. My students have two days each week when we read silently in Spanish. This project will provide us with more options for comprehensible reading during these times. It will also allow them to have Spanish reading materials for those times when they finish work early and are waiting for their classmates to finish.
Three of these books, Sonrie, Hermanas and Fantasmas are three titles that my students already check out of the library in English and this project will allow them to read them in Spanish as well. Many of these books, including Juliana, have themes that are popular with my students and having these books in Spanish will increase their interest in reading them.
Right now, my students are reading computer printed books that lack visual appeal and having real books will entice them to read more in Spanish.
