The track team at our school has approximately 50 athletes a year. They compete in all the typical track and field events despite our limited facilities. The hurdles are in particularly bad shape. Some hurdles are missing screws and some lean to one side.
The team has a no cut policy and allows students of varying athletic abilities, including special needs kids, to be a member of a high school athletic team. For many of these students, this a safe place for them to be involved after the school day. 85% of our students currently receive free or reduced price lunch system, and their neighborhoods do not always provide a safe place for them to be after school. The track program houses a good portion of students who find camaraderie, discipline, and mentorship. For them to get new equipment would show them that someone beyond our school walls is truly looking out for them.
We need new training hurdles to give the students the opportunity to learn the skill and compete more effectively with other schools.
