With the rigor of Common Core Standards in Math, students are expected to explain their mathematical thinking. The use of manipulatives in our math program will allow my students to gain a concrete understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, and fractions. Right now we are sharing materials at our grade level, and they are not always available for student use. I see much greater success in my students when they have a visual and tangible way to discover new math concepts.
鈥淭he standards call for students to use math in situations that require mathematical knowledge. Correctly applying mathematical knowledge depends on students having a solid conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.鈥
-Commom Core Star Standard Initiative
The use of manipulatives also motivates my students to be an active part of the learning. They show teamwork as well as collaborate productively to reach their daily objectives. When my students have had ample time to use the math manipulatives, they have proven to have success in their mathematical thinking. I know it is my students鈥 connection to their experience with the manipulatives that enables them to express their understanding of mathematical concepts. It is my hope to get a class set of materials that can be available to my students at all times so that I continue to see their success.
