My students are native Spanish speakers that have never been formally taught about the language and need to improve their reading and writing skills as well as elevate their speaking to a more formal level. The best way to do this is to read.
Building a reading library will allow my student to spend a few minutes every class period reading novels and literature in Spanish to help expand their vocabulary as well as experience authentic usages of grammar and high level language that they do not experience in their everyday conversations. The library will also give lower-level students a head start in preparation for the AP Language and AP Literature exams that they will be able to take as upperclassmen, hopefully earning them AP credit to get into competitive colleges. My students are all honors level in other courses, and they have a leg-up in Spanish already as heritage speakers, therefore, reading will take them to the highest levels of the language and prepare them to be advanced-bilingual college students and businessmen and women in their future.
