They speak Amharic, Spanish, Oromo, Somali and Vietnamese at home. Each day in the reading groups when I pass out a new book to read, our students say, "Oh, thank you!" Despite the hardships of crowded living situation, a new language and parents that often have interrupted education, these students are diligent, collaborative, humble and grateful to learn in a safe environment. They range from Kindergarten to 5th grade and are all learning English as a second language (ELL-English language learners).
Although 100% of these learners live in poverty (receive free lunch), they are motivated to learn both academically and culturally through books.
