This page-turning novel will help my diverse group of students identify with the main character on various different levels. As a Title III school, many of my students come from low-income families. Not only is this a challenge, but the majority of them come from countries around the world. They are faced with learning a new language as well as trying to fit in with their peers. This book will help my students realize that facing a challenge may not be easy, however, through determination and perseverance, they can conquer their fears. The novel "Wonder" is about a boy who was born with a facial difference that prevented him from going to a main-stream school, until now. As he enters 5th grade, his mind is filled with various feelings: excitement, nervousness, and fear, to name but a few. The students in my class are made up of not only English Language Learners, but Special Education students as well. On a daily basis, they are faced with challenges I could never even imagine. It is my belief this book will help build their self-esteem and confidence both academically and emotionally.
